History

In the 19th Century there were dedicated Christians in England and Scotland who, heeding prophecies and miracle healings and with biblical foundations prayed for a reawakening of the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Apostolic congregation was thus founded. From 1832 the congregation was led by Apostles who were appointed by prophets . Because of disagreements on the interpretation of parts of the Holy Script and the appointment of new Apostles the "General Christian Apostolic Mission " was founded ;the origin of today's New Apostolic Church.

In 1893 a new apostolic Christian from northern Germany came to Switzerland looking for work and found employment in Zürich. He associated himself with other young men who were open for his profession of faith. Together with them he established the first new apostolic congregation in Switzerland. At Whitsun 1895 with the foundation of the congregation of Zürich -Hottingen the actual fundament of the New Apostolic Church Switzerland was laid. Later Hottingen became an independent area of work as the District Switzerland -Baden.

The congregation grew and the New Apostolic Faith spread in the town of Zürich and in further Swiss towns. Thus congregations developed, first in St.Gallen, Basel and Zofingen, later on in Winterthur, Schaffhausen , Bern and in other locations in Switzerland. The New Apostolic Church established itself in practically all parts of the country and registers a constant growth. In 1940 there were over 20,000 members in 191 congregations to be counted in Switzerland. Since 1970 the number of members remains constant at about 35,000.
